Mascenic was in prime position to knock off defending champs Campbell on Wednesday, but a pair of fourth-inning errors put the Cougars ahead for good. Scott Humphrey held Campbell scoreless through 3 2/3 before the Cougars plated two unearned. Campbell added a two-runย homer in the fifth for some insurance.

Daimon Gibson led off the sixth with a dinger to center field, but that would be the only run Mascenic scored, and they lost 4-1.

On Thursday, Mascenic jumped all over Newport, shutting out the Tigers 9-0. A litany of errors by Newport in the first inning led to four runs, and Mascenic never looked back. Justin Smith went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, and Cooper Wayrynen was 2-4 with three runs scored. Wayrynen also got the shutout win on the mound.

On Saturday, the Vikings nearly let their makeup game with struggling Pelham slip away. Up 5-3 in the seventh, after Mike Phillipsโ€™ two-out bunt single knocked in Roman Ojala, a pair of Mascenic errors handed Pelham a run and put the tying run on third and a runner on first.

Travis Rautiola, unaffected by the raucous Python bench, threw over to first half a dozen times before catching the runner off. The runner on third got himself into a rundown, and Ojala raced over, holding him at bay before firing to home when the runner committed. Catcher Drew Rines snagged the ball in his glove and tagged the tying run out at the plate.

Mascenic (8-4) played at WLC Monday night. The Vikings host red-hot rival Conant on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
