On Tuesday night, Jan. 16, Mi Corazon is hosting a “Taco Tuesday” fundraiser for the Wilton-Lyndeborogugh Dance Team. If you still have not been to Mi Corazon, this is the night to go!
Stop by for tacos and help out some Monadnock region athletes. Mi Corazon continues to be the most exciting thing that has happened in Greenfield since the days of the Yankee Siege, or possibly since the downtown got streetlights!
Stephenson Library in Greenfield is always a hub of activity in town. On Wednesday, Jan. 17, and Friday, Jan. 19, the library is hosting “Snowflakes with Helene,” where children can create paper snowflakes to be displayed on the library windows.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m., the library will host actress Sheryl Faye as Laura Ingalls Wilder. Faye specializes in historic female figures, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Amelia Earhart, Abigail Adams and, new this year, Queen Elizabeth II.
Faye says of her portrayal of Ingalls Wilder: “Laura Ingalls Wilder is our writer role model whose words bring to life the pioneer times during which she grew up. Children will learn about her encounters with neighboring Indians, her first experiences in school, the brutal winters which almost broke her family and the joy Laura found in the simple things in life: ‘love and duty, work and rest, and living close to nature.’ ”
Additionally, children will see the development of a writer beginning with simple storytelling, to Laura creating pictures for her blind sister Mary, to the development of her “Little House” books at the encouragement of her daughter, Rose. Faye will also introduce simple writing terms and techniques which are grade-level appropriate and reinforce the way writing is taught in schools, challenging children to write their own stories.
On Jan. 20, Brighid Wood, coach of the First Lego Challenge robotics team, is hosting a STEM activities day at the library. Children’s librarian Ella Cardermatori encourages families to come check out the Puzzle Corner, where puzzles are available to swap. Saturday, Jan. 27, is the Family Book Cub with Ella; this month’s book is “Shiloh.”
Taking advantage of the indoor basketball court at the Barbara C. Harris Center, the Recreation Department has organized adult pickup basketball on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Please email greenfieldrecdept@gmail.com for information and check the “Greenfield NH Community” Facebook page for weather updates.
The Friends of the Meetinghouse (FGCM) are eagerly waiting to hear from the people at the Rebels With a Cause charitable gaming organization. Thanks to the encouragement of state Sen. Denise Ricciardi, our group applied for and received a gaming partnership slot at Lakes Region Casino for the last two weeks of 2024.
Since this included New Years Eve and all of the holiday break, we are hopeful the Meetinghouse Building Fund will see a significant donation from this partnership. All New Hampshire nonprofits in good standing are eligible for this program; contact the New Hampshire Charitable Gaming Commission.
The FGCM’s next planned event is our silent auction and dinner cooked by the famous (in Greenfield, anyway) Sharon and Warren! Sharon Andrews and Warren Aldrich, both accomplished professional cooks, have been asking to make something besides bratwurst and chili, so stay tuned for information about our upcoming silent auction and dinner at the Meetinghouse. The FGCM is also looking for donations for the silent auction; please email greenfieldmeetinghouse@gmail.com to donate.
After six years, Greenfield’s School Board representative, Katherine Heck, will not be running for third term. Greenfielders, please consider running for School Board, or any of the open positions on town committees. We are fortunate we are still able to run our town mostly with volunteers, rather than having to pay professionals in every role. Greenfield needs you, and volunteering is a great way to meet people, learn about how our town works and make a difference.
If you have an idea for The Greenfield Beat, please send email to jtimmons@ledgertranscript.com.
