Harrisville will host an Earth Day presentation on regional efforts to protect hemlock forests from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the Harrisville Village Community Center, with a webcast on the Conservation Commissionโs website.
The Harrisville Hemlock Initiative said it has released more than 6,800 Laricobius nigrinus beetles in Harrisville, Dublin, Peterborough and Hancock during the past two years. The program, launched in 2024, has raised $76,900 and identified two potential insectaries for future beetle production.
Featured speaker Dr. Richard McDonald, an entomologist and project consultant, will present results from a weeklong monitoring effort conducted with the commission. Harry Wolhandler, commission chair and project director, and Ralph Zingaro, commission lead for field releases and monitoring, also will speak.
The event is open to the public. A recording will be posted on YouTube.
