A man who pointed a fully-loaded handgun at a Jaffrey gas station employee back in January has been sentenced to at least a year and a half in prison.

Jonathan Cox, 27, was sentenced to 1 and a half to four years in state prison after pleading guilty of a charge of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, according to court documents. He has received a 198 day pretrial confinement credit.

Cox was also sentenced to a three to six year prison sentence โ€“ all suspended for 10 years โ€“ after he pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a deadly weapon. Cox had previously been convicted of burglary in 2010 in Ohio.

Additionally, Cox has been ordered to participate in any counseling, treatment, and educational programs as directed by a probation/parole officer. The Department of Corrections can award Cox earned time reductions for successful completion of programs.

Jaffrey police were called to Mr. Mikeโ€™s on Route 202/Peterborough Street around 11:40 p.m. on Jan. 28 after an employee said Cox had pointed a gun at them after the employee refused to sell Cox alcohol. Mr. Mikeโ€™s doesnโ€™t sell alcohol after 11:30 p.m., and Cox had come in to purchase alcohol after that cutoff time, the employee told police.

Police alleged that after the interaction with the employee, Cox tapped on the storeโ€™s window with a handgun and then fled the scene. Police later arrested Cox โ€“ who was in possession of a fully-loaded Ruger handgun โ€“ on Blake Street.

There was previously a competency hearing scheduled for July 27, but the defense conceded that Cox is in fact competent.

When arrested, Cox was a Jaffrey resident, but recent court documents signed by Cox say he now resides in Akron, Ohio.
