A Massachusetts man died in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Route 124 in New Ipswich Tuesday night.

The accident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. as the vehicle was driving eastbound on Turnpike Road toward downtown New Ipswich near the Route 123, also known as Sharon Road, intersection.

The driver was Paul Alfond, 67, of Allston, Massachusetts, and he was wearing a seatbelt.

The New Hampshire Medical Examinerโ€™s office located evidence suggesting the driver had a medical emergency that resulted in the crash.

When emergency responders arrived, Alfond was trapped in the eastbound lane in an overturned Audi on Turnpike Road. The silver vehicle was model-year 2000 and registered in Massachusetts.

New Ipswich Fire Chief Meredith Lund said that the caller did not know whether the subject was still breathing, so a Life Flight request was activated by Souhegan Valley Ambulance Service, but canceled when the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witness statements and physical evidence suggest the car was driving erratically on Route 123 before the accident, possibly related to a medical emergency by the driver, according to a press release from New Ipswich police.

He drove through the intersection at a high speed, striking the embankment on the eastbound side of Route 124, and the car rolled over and rested on its roof.

Alfond was alone in the vehicle for the accident, and nobody else was hurt.

Peterborough and Jaffrey police departments assisted at the scene, and Greenvilleโ€™s fire department was on alert for calls in New Ipswich because New Ipswichโ€™s was working the scene.

New Ipswich police is handling the ongoing investigation.

Route 124 was closed for the accident for over three hours, until 8:30, according to Lund.
