They swear, they didn’t just come for the pie.

On Saturday, Democratic candidates for the state Legislature and Senate, Executive Council and county offices gathered in a rustic barn in New Ipswich to partake of home-made apple pie and hot cider and to meet and greet local residents, make short stump speeches and hand out leaflets and yard signs.

The Dems had a united “Vote from the bottom up” message, urging constituents not to just head to the polls for the presidential race at the top of the ticket in November.

“Your lives are so much more affected by the local candidates,” said state Senate candidate Peggy Gilmour, who will be running for the District 12 position this year after being outsted two years ago after a redistricting.

The candidates had a mostly united message of battling the opioid crisis, continuing Medicaid expansion and funding to Planned Parenthood, and spurring clean energy development in the state.

“Democrats are the party of yes,” said House of Representatives candidate Steve Shurtleff. “We want to move things forward.”

“If you’re not sure about the names on your ticket, just remember the letters on your shifter,” said County Attorney candidate and former Peterborough resident Garth Corriveau. “D is for drive and R is for reverse.”

The event was hosted by the New Ipswich and Temple and Sharon Democrats.
