Fire department, recycling center, and DPW officials are working together to better utilize space at the recycling center.
Although the plan is in its infancy, the DPW plans to pull gravel from the recycling center to use for the town’s gravel roads.
After more space is created from removing gravel, the recycling center will reorganize, giving more room for a fire department training building.
“I’m seeing this as a win-win-win for you guys and furthermore, a win for the town of Greenfield,” said Selectman Bob Marshall, at the board meeting Tuesday. “The problem is, we need a plan to assure that it is a win for everyone.”
Fire Chief David Hall, Recycling Center Supervisor Carole Burgess, and DPW Roads Manager Neal Beauregard met with the board Tuesday to have a preliminary discussion about the project.
Beauregard said he hopes to take materials from the recycling center to mix with materials at the town’s Forest Road pit to create gravel to be used to repair town roads.
Beauregard said he could coordinate the removal of materials for the fall. Town Administrator Aaron Patt estimates doing this can save the town about $26,000 in one year.
Burgess said she would work to create a site plan for the recycling center, which would be no cost to the town and take about a month.
Hall’s project is the furthest from completion, as he said spring 2017 would be the earliest he could break ground.
Hall wants to build a firefighter training building that would be used primarily by Greenfield, but could also be used by other departments. Hall said he was willing to place the building anywhere at the transfer station.
