The Town of Sharon will host a ceremony to celebrate the inclusion of its 1832 Brick Schoolhouse on the Country Schools Association of America’s National Registry on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
The event, held at 432 NH Route 123 in Sharon, marks the site as one of only five designated “Landmark” school buildings in New Hampshire and the first in the Monadnock region. A permanent plaque on the building’s exterior will be unveiled during the presentation.
Built for roughly $300 and spanning under 600 square feet, the Brick Schoolhouse educated Sharon students across all grade levels until 1920. It is the only surviving building of the town’s original three one-room schools and previously received designations on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places over two decades ago.
The ceremony will begin with a flag-raising by Boy Scout Troop 3877. Featured speakers include Ben Wilson, director of the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources; Gina Goff, author and member of the Sharon Archives Committee; and Susan Fineman, board member of the Country Schools Association of America, along with members of the Sharon Selectboard.
The event will be held outdoors, weather permitting, or inside the schoolhouse in case of rain. Refreshments will be provided by volunteers from the Sharing in Sharon Committee.
