Peterborough resident Jack Hutchings’ death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Hutchings, 24, died Sunday evening from multiple gunshot wounds, according to information released by the attorney general’s office on Friday.
Authorities said all parties in the shooting have been identified and are cooperative, though they have not publicly named the shooter.
The incident involved an off-duty Peterborough police officer, Douglas MacPherson, who owns the Grove Street property where the shooting occurred. MacPherson was hospitalized with stab and incised wounds but returned home Tuesday. He had not yet returned to work as of Thursday, the Peterborough police chief said.
Witnesses told investigators with the attorney general’s office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit that the officer was off duty and outside his home with his young children when the incident occurred.
A 911 call came in around 8 p.m. Sunday reporting an altercation between two neighbors outside their homes, according to the attorney general’s office.
The homicide investigation is ongoing and will evaluate whether the shooting was self-defense or the defense of others.
