The third annual Greenfield Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Community Meetinghouse and Stephenson Memorial Library, took place Saturday at the Greenfield Meetinghouse. The event is organized each year by Billie-Jean Greene.
Participants in the youth spelling event included Naudia Billodeau, Kazi Cohen, Jerry Goodwin, Kolton Kokal, Aiden McCloat, Tommy Place, Lydia Russell and Laurel Wilkins.
Participants were given words which were appropriate for their age and grade level. Ella Cademartori, director of Stephenson Memorial Library, moderated and read words from the national spelling bee list.
First-grader Kazi Cohen, 6, spelled every word in his category correctly and took home the first-place certificate. Runners-up were Kolton Kokal, Jerry Goodwin and Tommy Place.
Participants in the adult round included Violet Wilkins, Martha Pitt, Dale Walker, Alyssum Proctor-Russell and Bailey Sweet. Proctor-Russell and Walker competed in several tiebreaker rounds.
“It was very exciting this year. We had run-offs for both the children and adult rounds and they both went back and forth several times. With the adults, we almost ran out of words,” Greene said.
The event raised about $1,000 for the Friends of the Greenfield Community Meetinghouse building fund.
