Memorial Day weekend, traditionally the start of New Hampshireโs busy summer hiking season, is approaching, and state officials are urging outdoor enthusiasts to prepare for changing weather conditions and lingering snow and ice at higher elevations.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is also encouraging hikers, climbers, paddlers and other outdoor recreation participants to purchase a voluntary 2026 Hike Safe card, which helps fund training and search-and-rescue equipment for conservation officers.
Officials recommend hikers carry the โ10 essentials,โ including a map, compass, extra food and water, warm clothing, rain gear, flashlight or headlamp, fire starters, first aid kit, whistle and pocket knife.
Hike Safe cards cost $25 for individuals and $35 for families and are valid through Dec. 31, 2026. Hunting and fishing licenses provide the same coverage as a Hike Safe card.
Cards can be purchased online at wildnh.com/safe or at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord.
More information about hiking safety is available at hikesafe.com and wildnh.com.
