Despite light rain and overcast skies, a strong turnout marked the annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 2, at Great Brook in Memorial Park.

Children and families lined the banks ahead of the start, and excitement built quickly when the first fish was caught within the opening minute.

Organizers presented awards in multiple categories, including first fish, biggest and smallest fish, and first limit catches for boys and girls in two age groups: 7 and older, and 6 and younger. A sportsmanship award was also given to a young angler who shared his own tackle with another child, reflecting the event’s spirit.

Following the awards, children participated in a raffle featuring dozens of prizes and gift certificates donated by local businesses.

Organizers expressed appreciation to community supporters, including Bacon Electric, CPR Auto Clinic, Dunkin’ Donuts, Edmunds, J.M. Cutter Carpentry, New Boston Pizza, Rick & Diane’s, Ryben Fabrication, Secret Weapon Custom Baits and The Wire Nut, as well as volunteers from the Antrim Recreation Department, Ryben Fabrication and cleanup crews who prepared the site.

The derby has been led in recent years by Aaron Hyer and Joel Schacht and their families, with support from the Antrim Recreation Department. Organizers said community backing will help sustain the tradition for future generations.
