A man died following a car crash in Mason on Wednesday.

According to Mason Police Sgt. Richard Fortin, passersby came upon a single vehicle that had left Barrett Hill Road and struck a tree at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday and called emergency services.

When first responders arrived, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was still inside with injuries and appeared dazed, according to Fortin.

The man was transported by Brookline Ambulance to a landing zone on Adams Road in Greenville, where he was flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He was later pronounced dead.

Fortin said there were no witnesses to the crash, and the cause has not been determined. Road and weather conditions were good at the time, and there is no clear indication why the vehicle left the roadway, he said.

Barrett Hill Road was closed between Route 31 and the state line during the investigation and cleanup.
