Support our police and firefighters

It disgusts me to know that the people in positions of authority in Rindge are actively trying to make the townspeople suffer, but donโ€™t take my word for it. Go to the selectmenโ€™s meetings and listen to them claim that we donโ€™t need a new fire chief. Listen to them refuse to give our police officers a pay raise so that we can keep them from leaving. There have been several fires this year. There have been nine burglaries, and itโ€™s only January. Drug overdoses and sexual assault are on the rise, and yet the selectmen claim they canโ€™t adequately fund the departments essential to keep us safe.
I know that the people of Rindge are smarting because of this yearโ€™s property tax reassessment. The critical question, though, is why we pay taxes at all. The most basic indicator of a healthy society or town is functioning police and fire departments. That is why we pay taxes: to keep ourselves safe.
We all pay federal income taxes, and it appalls me that our selectmen have the attitude that accepting federal grant money is bad. That is our money. The federal government wants to give us back our money to help support our police and fire departments, and yet our selectmen refuse to consider it.
A simple question: Where will you lay the blame when your house burns down?
