Wilton Community Power has announced new electricity rates taking effect Dec. 1, with prices remaining relatively steady compared to current levels. The town will continue to contract with its existing energy provider, Direct Energy Services.
Community Power programs allow groups of customers โ in this case, the town of Wilton โ to combine their purchasing power to negotiate electricity rates. The electricity continues to be delivered through Eversource infrastructure, but the model allows communities to secure potentially longer contracts than Eversource, which adjusts its rates on a fixed schedule.
Wilton offers four power options:
- Basic: Meets the stateโs minimum renewable energy requirement of 25.2%, at 11.23 cents per kilowatt hour.
- Default: Includes 10% more renewable energy, at 11.62 cents per kilowatt hour.
- 50% Renewables: 12.20 cents per kilowatt hour.
- 100% Renewables: 14.17 cents per kilowatt hour.
Each rate represents an increase of less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour. For comparison, Eversourceโs current rate is 11.196 cents per kilowatt hour.
Residents already enrolled in Wilton Community Power do not need to take any action to remain at their current option, which will automatically continue at the new rate.
New customers may enroll in the program at any time. Participation is voluntary, and residents may opt out at no cost to return to Eversourceโs default service or choose another third-party supplier.
Any changes will be made on the next available meter read date and may take one or two billing cycles to be reflected on individual bills.
