On Oct. 4, 11 members of Team Maureen gathered in Concord to raise funds and awareness at the annual New Hampshire Walk to Defeat ALS. The team walked to support those currently battling Lou Gehrigโs disease and to honor those lost to it.
Team Maureen has participated in the walk since 2005 in honor of Maureen McPhie Thomas, a Jaffrey native and Peterborough resident who died from ALS in 2007 at age 66.
This year, Team Maureen was the top fundraising team in the state, raising more than $10,000. Tami Risk, the life partner of Maureenโs son Nick Thomas, was the top individual fundraiser in New Hampshire for the second year in a row.
The ALS Association of Northern New England recognized Maureenโs husband and longtime team captain, Wayne Thomas, with a certificate honoring his 20 years of leadership and the more than $75,000 raised by Team Maureen over that time.
There is currently no cure for ALS, but Team Maureen continues to support both the scientists searching for one and the caregivers who assist patients, keeping alive the memory of Maureen Thomas through their ongoing efforts.
