On Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 2:30 p.m., Peterborough Fire-Rescue, New Ipswich Fire-Rescue, Jaffrey Fire-Rescue and New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers responded to a trail near Casalis State Forest in Sharon for a reported injured mountain biker.

First responders located Rodney Nichols, 65, of New Ipswich, about nine-tenths of a mile from the trailhead with a serious leg injury that prevented him from walking or riding. Nichols was treated and carried out in a litter to Route 123, then taken by ambulance to Elliot Hospital in Manchester before being transferred to Boston Medical Center.

Officials said Nichols lost control of his mountain bike on a narrow bridge and fell into a brook below. He was wearing a helmet and appeared prepared for a day of mountain biking.

New Hampshire Fish and Game, a self-funded agency that relies heavily on volunteer rescue groups, reminded the public that search-and-rescue efforts can be supported through the purchase of a Hike Safe Card.
