The Town of Peterborough will hold a Special Town Meeting on Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Peterborough Town House.
All Peterborough voters are encouraged to attend.
Voters will be asked to consider adding an amendment to Article 17, which passed at Town Meeting in May, to allow elderly Peterborough residents who qualify for exemption from property tax to take advantage of that exemption effective April 1, 2025.
The original warrant article passed May 15, 2025 did not specify what date that residents could take advantage of the new exemptions. The amendment would allow qualifying residents to claim the exemption for tax year 2025.
Article 17 proposed the Town of Peterborough modify the elderly tax exemption so that a person who meets all the qualifications will be granted a tax exemption on the first $100,000 of their propertyโs value, with that amount increasing over time.
The property value exemptions were amended as follows: for a person aged 65 to 75 years old, an assessed value of $100,000; for a person aged 75 to 85 years, assessed value of $150,000; for a person aged 80 years or older, assessed value of $200,000. The complete requirements for the elderly tax exemption can be found atย peterboroughnh.gov/departments/assessing/elderly_and_blind_exemptions.php.
According to Peterborough Town Administrator Nicole MacStay, the Special Town Meeting will not incur any additional cost to the taxpayers.
The Peterborough Select Board unanimously recommends the article.
