Wilton Town Meeting thoughts

To The Editor,
I would like to share a few personal thoughts about town meeting, specifically the 2026 Wilton Town Meeting.
1. Only 97 voters showed up for this yearโ€™s town meeting. That is 3.3% of the registered voters. That is a shame. Actually, that is a disgrace.
2. One non-resident who is a town property owner showed up. We voted to allow her to speak her mind. Bravo to a non-resident, who had no vote, but traveled from another town to express her concerns.
3. I am a combat veteran. I served 22 years on active duty, more than half the time overseas. I consider attending Town Meeting a privilege and an obligation of citizenship. I always envied the people who could attend.
4. If you think taxes are too high, and if you were able but decided not to attend Town Meeting, then you are part of the problem.
5. This year we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of our Declaration of Independence. If only 3.3% of the voters showed up for the 1775 Wilton Town Meeting, we would still be a colony of Britain.
