Jaffrey will mark Independence Day with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence on Thursday, July 4, at noon at the historic Meetinghouse, 14 Laban Ainsworth Way.

Local officials, residents and community leaders will take turns reading sections of the document from the 1775 Meetinghouse stage. The reading, now in its 25th year, will be followed by an ice cream social in the Horsesheds behind the Meetinghouse. The restored Seagrave fire engine and a modern Jaffrey fire truck will be on display on the common. The Little Red Schoolhouse will also be open to visitors.

The free, rain-or-shine event is co-sponsored by the Jaffrey Center Village Improvement Society, the Jaffrey Historical Society, the Jaffrey Historic District Commission and the town’s Selectmen’s Meetinghouse Committee.
