Dublin Community Center presents “Jazz In July” Sunday, July 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the garden sanctuary behind Dublin Community Church, 1125 Main St.
Audience members can bring lawn chairs and their own picnic dinners. In the event of rain, the concert will be inside the church. Although this is a free event, tips for the band and donations to the DubHub will be accepted.
Saxophonist Paul Klemperer will perform, accompanied by Gordon Peery on piano, Dave Morse on bass and Brian Quinn on drums, along with various local singers and instrumentalists. Klemperer works as a bandleader, teacher, composer and writer. Born in Boston, he discovered jazz at an early age, sneaking into clubs by age 13. He studied with Archie Shepp, Max Roach and Ray Copeland before moving to Austin, Texas, in 1982. There, he has worked with artists such as Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, Doyle Bramhall, Malford Milligan, Seth Walker, Nick Curran and members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Klemperer lives in Austin but spends most of the summer at his ancestral summer home, in Nelson.
Peery is known throughout the Monadnock region for his work as a contra dance musician, but in recent years has expanded into other genres, including jazz. He has been part of Klemperer’s summer band for the last 10 years and has also backed up vocalists performing the American Songbook.
Dave Morse has played upright and electric bass and the baritone sax in various big bands since high school. After moving to Keene in 1996, he studied bass-line construction and harmony with Scott Mullett. He was one of the founding members of the Keene Jazz Orchestra and continues today as the KJO treasurer and front-end manager while subbing on bass and baritone sax.
Originally based in New York City for 20 years, Quinn has performed at venues spanning from Birdland Jazz Club to CBGBs. He was trained in jazz at The New School, where he studied with Billy Hart, Michael Carvin, Joe Chambers, and Shawn Pelton. He now resides in New Hampshire.
