On Thursday June 22, voters will be called to a Special Town Meeting to decide whether to rescind a vote designating a town property for a new highway garage, and whether to establish a site committee to evaluate alternate options for the building.
The meeting, called by a petition of 65 town residents, is 7 p.m. at the Temple Elementary School.
In March, voters approved a warrant article designating a five-acre portion of a 65-acre lot, known as the Skladany land off Route 45, as the new location for the town’s Highway Department. The Highway Department is currently located behind Town Hall.
The town is interested in moving the department because of the condition of the existing building, to expand parking behind the Town Hall, and to resolve traffic issues caused by the Town Hall, Mansfield Public Library and Highway Department sharing single access.
The vote was among the most controversial taken during Town Meeting, with 78 in favor, and 49 against.
The first article on the ballot for Thursday is to rescind that vote.
The second article is to establish a committee “for the purpose of evaluating all options pertaining to the current highway department site.” The article directs the committee to conduct a feasibility study and a cost analysis for possible sites for the Highway Department.
