Peterborough Garden Club will present a lecture Monday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m. to noon by George Caughey, whose topic will be”Mushrooms in New Hampshire Ecology: A Primer.”

The lecture will be at Harris Center for Conservation Education, 83 Kings Highway in Hancock.

Fungi are diverse life forms whose lives integrate closely with those of southern New Hampshire’s plants, from oaks and pines to native orchids. In addition to roles as “nature’s recyclers” of dead material such fallen trees, fungi that often are hidden from sight also form mutually beneficial relationships with living plants, which they can help to germinate, acquire and share nutrients, communicate and survive stressors. This program will review fundamentals of fungal ecology as well as some of the region’s mushrooms.

The public is welcome to attend for a fee of $5 payable in cash at the door.

The purpose of the Peterborough Garden Club, established in 1962, is to encourage and stimulate interest in the beautification of home and public properties and to study and share information on gardening, horticulture, conservation, flower arranging and related topics.
