The Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Teachers Association has awarded Wilton senior Madeleine Straw a $500 scholarship to pursue a career in education.
Starting this summer, Straw intends to begin her studies at Rivier University in Nashua to become a high school social studies teacher. She took her inspiration from her mother, who is a teacher in Milford, and said she originally planned to follow in her footsteps as an early childhood educator. However, her own experiences in high school, and taking classes she loved, have turned her eye to teaching older teens, she said.
Straw said Rivier appealed to her both because it’s local, and also because it would allow her to take a major specific to social studies education, rather than a more-general course. Straw will begin her college career this summer, with a single course, before starting full time in the fall.
WLC Teacher’s Association co-president Andrea Patrone said Straw’s scholarship essay, which was about her passion for the subject, and her desire to teach it, stood out among the submissions.
