Antrim Eclectic Book Club will present “Educated” by Tara Westover Thursday, April 21, from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. at James A. Tuttle Library, 45 Main St. Steve Ullman is coordinating the event.
Westover grew up in rural Idaho under the domination of her religious father, who was a survivalist and a skeptic about education. During her childhood and adolescence, Westover never saw a doctor. She also lacked a birth certificate, and therefore, the State of Idaho did not know she existed until when at age 16 she first enrolled in public school. Almost devoid of formal schooling to that point, Westover decided to study for the ACT, a standardized college admissions test. She did well enough on the ACT to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she eventually graduated magna cum laude. From there she went on to earn a master’s degree at Cambridge and a doctorate at Harvard .
Despite these accomplishments, Westover continued to obsess about how she should express her loyalty to her family, and “Educated” is an account of how Westover triumphed over her obstacles
