Historian Pamela Weeks will present an illustrated lecture on quilts from the Civil War Thursday, Feb. 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hancock Historical Society, 7 Main St.
Only 20 quilts made for use by soldiers in the Civil War are known to exist, and Weeks has studied most of them in person. Her lecture outlines the origins of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at the beginning of the Civil War and examines the roles women played on the home front, and as nurses. The stories of 14 actual Civil War soldiers’ quilts will be highlighted.
The free program is presented in conjunction with New Hampshire Humanities.
