Local publisher Monadnock Underground announces three winter writing workshops to be conducted in partnership with poet and writing teacher Brian Evans-Jones in February and March.

Led by Evans-Jones and held at the Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St. in Peterborough, these workshops offer an opportunity for writers of all ages and levels of experience to hone their craft, gain new perspectives and receive feedback in a friendly and constructive setting.

The first session is on memoir Feb. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The topic is “Mining Memory.” Participants in the workshop will learn how to tap into their memories more deeply, in order to make writing that is more vivid, compelling and surprising. They will also learn new ways to structure memoir.

Fiction writers get their turn next, with two sessions on March 1 and 8, from 6:30 to 8 pm. This workshop will focus on “Characters That Work” — different ways to invent characters, how make them come alive and how to use them to create long or short stories.

Poetry rounds out the series March 15 and 22, also 6:30 to 8 p.m., with a workshop on “Imagined Places.” Poets will learn how to write powerful poems about any kind of place while exploring their lost places, dream places and even impossible places.

The memoir workshop is $60, while the fiction and poetry workshops are each $65. Registration is required at monadnockunderground.com/shop

Brian Evans-Jones is a former poet laureate of Hampshire, England, and won the Maureen Egan Award from Poets & Writers in 2017. He has taught writing since 2005, sharing his experience in both academic settings and independently run workshops, including venues such as the Jane Austen House in England.

Monadnock Underground is an online literary journal and boutique publishing house dedicated to promoting writers and the craft of writing. Since 2019, M/U has published hundreds of essays, short stories and poems online, along with five paperbacks and two glossy anthologies.

“We are thrilled to be able to expand our offerings to this in-person world,” M/U Creative Director Chris DiLoreto stated. “For us, these workshops are a chance to further our mission to promote writing in a new way, directly offering local writers a means by which to hone their craft, and we’re beyond lucky to be partnered with someone as talented as Brian.”

This event is presented exclusively by Monadnock Underground and is not officially sponsored by the Peterborough Town Library.
