On Thursday, Nov. 18, from 2:25 to 3:15 p.m., the Antrim Electric Book Club at the James A. Tuttle Library will hold a discussion of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian novel published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England in a strongly patriarchal, totalitarian state that has overthrown the United States government.
Questions that may orient the conversation include “Why did at least one reviewer warn readers to read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ while they were still allowed?” “To what degree do you think ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a realistic prediction of how America will evolve?” “How reliable a narrator is Offred?” “Is there really no hope for women like Offred in the Republic of Gilead?” “What happens to Offred, Ofglen, and Moira at the end of the novel?” and “What should the reader conclude from the ‘Historical Notes’ section Atwood appends?”
The conversation will be low-key and informal. For information, send email to Steve Ullman at sullman@brockport.edu.
