Hancock author Howard Mansfield tells stories from his new book, “Chasing Eden: A Book of Seekers,” by an open fire outdoors behind the Hancock Inn, 33 Main St., Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5 p.m.
“Chasing Eden” is about Americans seeking their Promised Land, their utopia: the Shakers in the twilight of their utopia; the Wampanoags confronting the Pilgrims; the landscape painters who taught Americans that in wilderness was Eden; and 40,000 Africans newly freed from slavery granted 40 acres and a mule – only to be swiftly dispossessed. These and other seekers were on the road to find out, all united by their longing to find in America “a revolution of the spirit.”
Attendees should bring masks as well as chairs if they can. The library will have some chairs available. The Hancock Town Library and the Hancock Inn are cosponsoring the event. For information, call the library at 525-4411.
