Greenville’s third-ever Old Home Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, and like its very first year, the event will be combined with the town’s postponed Fourth of July fireworks display.

Town administrator Tara Sousa recounted the inception of Old Home Day, in 2018, was due to the town’s fireworks display being canceled and the town choosing to hold an Old Home Day event in order to have the fireworks happen later in the summer.

“This event was devised as an opportunity to bring the community together,” Sousa said, “in an event with a different feel, and that’s why Old Home Day was chosen – it has more of an old-time type aspect to it.”

Afterward, the town decided to continue Old Home Day, since the event had been successful. The postponed fireworks display will be put on after dark, and other Fourth of July festivities will be held: the town’s street dance and the pots and pans parade.

Additionally, the event will feature local live music, various vendors, town agencies, and nonprofits in attendance and a barbeque.

Sousa said that after most events like this were canceled last year due to COVID-19, she and other town officials are excited to bring Old Home Day back. Even in the face of rising cases, Sousa said that they were confident in the safety of the event, with it being outdoors and providing space for social distancing, and the low caseload for Greenville itself.

“We’re happy to have the ability to have events again and bring the community together in this way,” Sousa said. “We hope people will come out and take advantage of it.”

Greenville’s Old Home Day will be held at the Town Field on Adams Street, from 3 to 9 p.m. Local nonprofits, artisans, or farmer’s market vendors wishing to reserve free space at the event should reach out to the town administrator’s office.
