The Crotched Mountain School campus will be taxed as a nonprofit this year, as its sale from nonprofit Crotched Mountain Foundation to for-profit Gersh Autism is not expected to complete until June 30.
The campus’s ownership as of April 1 determined its tax status for the coming year, Town Administrator Aaron Patt said. Greenfield expects to receive an annual $180,000 PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) from the campus, he said, as it has in previous years. A lump sum was typical in the past, but Gersh has been paying month to month, he said, and has paid $45,000 to date.
Crotched Mountain Foundation announced its intent to close the Greenfield campus last June. In August, Gersh Autism signed on to keep the school open and took over management in November, in advance of a purchase that was expected in Spring 2021 at the time. Gersh will continue to run the facility under a management services agreement in the meantime, Gersh Vice President of Marketing & Communications Jen Domash said on Friday.
