The town of Jaffrey has applied for an additional $500,000 in grant funding to support the development of a shared new water source with the town of Peterborough.

Both Jaffrey and Peterborough have already approved funds to purchase the property known as Cold Stone Springs, located on the border of Sharon and Jaffrey. The property already has three wells drilled and approved for use as drinking water.

Jaffrey and Peterborough plan to build a new water treatment facility on the property, and install piping to connect the water source to their current systems to supplement their current drinking water supply.

On Tuesday, following a public hearing, the Jaffrey Select Board approved applying for a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant. These grants are awarded mainly for projects which have a primary benefit to low- or moderate-income populations, and result in job generation.

Jaffrey manufacturer MilliporeSigma expects to be able to expand as a result of the access to additional water, and expect to be able to add at least 25 jobs at their Jaffrey facility, at least 15 of which will be dedicated to people who currently have a low or moderate income.
