Eva Hodgson of Rindge, a rising star in Division I women’s basketball at William and Mary, announced Friday she would opt out of the upcoming 2020-21 season.
“As the competitor that I am, I have truly wrestled with this decision,” Hodgson wrote in a statement posted to Twitter Friday. “At the end of the day, through a lot of prayer, gathering of information, and counsel from those I hold dear, I’ve come to the conclusion that concerns over contracting and/or transmitting COVID-19 are not worth putting anyone in jeopardy.”
Hodgson, a junior, was the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year her freshman season and led the CAA and ranked eighth in the NCAA in scoring last season, averaging 20.7 points per game.
“I love the game of basketball and my teammates and will miss the game dearly, but I will continue to support my team the best I can and hope for the best for them and fellow CAA competitors,” Hodgson wrote.
According to the NCAA’s COVID-19 opt-out policy, Hodgson will retain her scholarship and will still have two more years of eligibility.
Hodgson won a Division III state championship her freshman year at Conant High School in 2014-15 before transferring to New Hampton School for the remainder of her high school career.
