In partnership with Peterborough resident John Adams, the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript invites local middle and high school students to enter the Lifelong Newspaper Reader Program contest.

The program is made possible by a $1,500 contribution of Adams, 89, a lifelong newspaper fan. โ€œIโ€™m a very big believer in print media,โ€ he said. โ€œI think itโ€™s very valuable.โ€

Adams came to the Ledger-Transcript with an idea and a financial contribution to โ€œdo something with schools, to encourage young people to read the newspaper.โ€ He said, โ€œI am afraid too many do not understand the importance of this newspaper, and newspapers in general. What can we do together?โ€

Thirty winners will be welcomed into the program. Each winner will receive a six-month subscription to the newspaper, and will contribute work for publication. Winners will be given a list of possible topics and may receive help from participating teachers or other mentors.

Since moving to this area in 1994, Adams has been a subscriber of the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, formerly the Monadnock Ledger. In 2006, the Monadnock Ledger acquired the Peterborough Transcript and shortly after, the Tuesday edition was added to the long-standing weekly Thursday edition. The Tuesday edition increased the newspaperโ€™s community news coverage and made it possible to offer positions to Transcript staff members.

โ€œWe appreciate Johnโ€™s incredible generosity and are excited to offer this program to encourage the next generation of newspaper readers,โ€ said Heather McKernan, Monadnock Ledger-Transcript publisher. โ€œI hope everyone will help spread the word about this program. Every middle and high school student and teacher is eligible to apply.โ€

To enter the contest, email Heather McKernan at hmckernan@ledgertranscript.com. Include name, age, address and school in your email. In a few sentences, tell us why you like the newspaper and why you want to be part of the program. All entries are due by May 10.
