At the direction of President Donald Trump, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a Tweet Friday morning, “we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15.”
“All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties,” Mnuchin said in the late morning Tweet.
This news was a welcome reprieve to all taxpayers dealing with the complications of daily life that have come with the response to COVID-19, but especially to the local volunteers who help low-income filers.
On Saturday, the River Center in Peterborough offered curbside valet pick-up service for those who had already filed through the center’s free tax prep services. The IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is for qualifying individuals and households with incomes of up to $66,000.
“Due to the closure of The River Center and the suspension of operations of the tax clinic during the public health crisis, we held a curbside pick-up of returns that were already in progress when the tax program was put on hold. We did this in order to minimize person-to-person contact along with the use of hand sanitizer and fresh pens,” River Center’s Nisa Simila said in an email Saturday. “Following the announcement by the Treasury and the IRS that Federal Tax Day has been extended to July 15, we are now planning to resume tax prep services once The River Center re-opens. Taxpayers who haven’t yet filed can email us at taxes@rivercenter.us to get on our appointment call list for when we re-open.
