Jaffrey’s third annual St. Patrick’s Day parade this Sunday is expected to include hundreds of marchers, making it the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the state, second only to Manchester’s, organizer Kevin Hampsey said Thursday.
The parade begins, aptly enough, at St. Patrick Church on Main Street, travels through downtown Jaffrey and ends at Conant High School on Stratton Road.
“You can hear the bagpipers and drums, and then you can see the flags come over the hill,” Hampsey said, of the parade’s entrance to downtown Jaffrey. “And we have [Mount] Monadnock in the background. Not even the Boston parade has that.”
The parade this year is expected to be bigger then the first two with six different bands, floats from Monadnock Disposal Service, Red’s, Apollo Steel, Atlas Pyrotechnics, Monadnock Kitty Rescue and other local businesses, and marchers from Irish dancing groups, local businesses and nonprofits. The 2020 parade marshal is one of its founders, Ireland native Jimmy Quinn of Jaffrey.
“We have more people, more bands. It should be a big day,” Hampsey said. “It’s something to get us through this long winter. People are ready for spring.”
In addition to the parade, two other St. Patrick’s Day events are planned in Jaffrey over the weekend.
Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., The Kelly Girls, a New England Celtic band, is scheduled to perform at the Jaffrey American Legion. Tickets are $20.
And on Sunday, at 3 p.m. following the parade, and again at 6:30 p.m., there is an exclusive screening of the 25th Anniversary performance of Riverdance, in high definition, played at the Jaffrey Woman’s Club. Tickets are $15, or $10 for children 12 and under.
Marchers in the parade are requested to gather at St. Patrick’s Church in Jaffrey at 1 p.m. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. Residents should expect traffic delays during the parade.
As part of the celebrations, $100 prizes for the best St. Patrick’s Day Window Display in downtown Jaffrey and $100 for the best parade float are to be awarded.
