To the editor:

I got the best Christmas present ever on Dec. 23, 2019. It was the spirit of community. It began with the closing of an establishment in Milford. This place had been running an open mic on Monday nights for a number of years. The abrupt closing left the host of the open mic and the barmaid in a quagmire. They were not informed of these happenings until they arrived at this venue.

In light of these happenings, Dan Moran, the host, Kaylee Verville, the barmaid and Rivermill Tavern stepped up big time. Rivermill knowing Kaylee and Dan quite well had the event take place there. It was well attended by local musicians and patrons alike.

This is not where the story ends. Kaylee brought out a tip jar for Dan because she said he was doing out of the goodness of his heart. Speaking of having a good heart, Dan had the money go to a Rivermill employee whose relative is going through serious health issues.

This was real life not some sort of smaltzy movie. Real life can be good because of people like Kaylee, Dan, the owners and employees of Rivermill Tavern, local musicians and the patrons who attended the event.

Thank you all,

Dwight Shelton
