New Ipswich firefighters responded to a possible electrical fire inside the walls of a Greenville Road home Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded at about 9:54 a.m. New Years Day, New Ipswich Fire Chief Meredith Lund said Wednesday afternoon.
“It turns out it’s probably in the electric box itself,” Lund said.
Upon arrival firefighters found a light haze of smoke in the building, Lund said, and were able to “easily shut down” all of the electricity in the house.
“We had no fires in the wall just stuff in the electrical box itself,” she said. “We had a little bit of charring inside the electrical box.”
The homeowner told firefighters he had been experiencing a problem with his electricity since the day before and when he thought there was a fire inside the walls Wednesday morning, he did the right thing, Lund said; he turned off his propane, called the fire department and waited outside of the house for the firefighters.
Lund said she is not sure what the exact problem is but said the firefighters shut off the electricity and the homeowner plans to bring in an electrician to solve the problem.
Firefighters cleared the scene just under an hour after responding.
“It turned out to be a minor thing for us which we were glad for on the first of the New Year,” Lund said.
