A two-family home on 59 Union Street in Peterborough was demolished last week to make room for two single-family homes and a duplex. The proposal for the site was initially introduced to the Planning Board in 2016.

“It was not occupied when we first got involved and the building was in great disrepair at that time,” wrote project representative Chad Branon in an email. “In fact we conducted a site walk early on (maybe second meeting with Board) and had the Board Members walk through the house to verify the conditions and see that it was beyond repair.”

Branon said that resolving a disputed property boundary and a conflict with the Groundwater Protection Overlay District standards set back the progress of the project.

Branon said the three proposed structures will each sit on their own lot on the .499 acre site.

The house was built in 1857, foreclosed in 2015, and was purchased by GATO Properties LLC in February 2016, according to its property record card.

A demolition permit has been filed for 10 High Street. In accordance with procedure, there will be a public meeting with the Heritage Commission’s Demoliton Review Committee in the Town House on Thursday at 6 p.m. to discuss possible alternatives to demolition.
