Rescue crews worked for over an hour Saturday night to extricate a driver from a crash on Goen Road in New Ipswich.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy from New Ipswich, who was the car’s only occupant, was life-flighted with serious injuries from the NeWest Mall parking lot.

New Ipswich Police Chief Tim Carpenter said Monday the 2001 Ford Mustang left the road and crashed broadside into a tree on the driver’s side. The crash occurred shortly after 10:10 p.m., in the area of 157 Goen Road.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, Carpenter said, but speed appears to be a contributing factor.

The driver was conscious and aware when crews arrived, according to New Ipswich Fire Chief Meredith Lund, but was thoroughly pinned by the crush damage to his vehicle.

“His legs were pinned,” Lund said. “It was one of the longest, most intricate extractions we’ve done in a long, long time, but it went well.”

It took more than an hour to extract the driver safely, Lund said. So long, in fact, that rescue crews requested extra paramedics from Peterborough’s ambulance and rescue crew, and the medic crew from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advance Response Team helicopter to come to the scene to administer pain relief and monitor the driver during the extraction.

“That’s the first time I can remember we’ve brought people from the DHART to the scene,” Lund said.

The Greenville Fire Department also responded with a second cutting tool to assist in taking the vehicle apart.

Once free of the vehicle, the driver was taken to the NeWest Mall landing field by ambulance and flown to the hospital for treatment.
