The Select Board voted unanimously to waive the connection fees for an automatic emergency water sprinkler system that the Keystone Management Company agreed to install at the Riverview apartment complex.

Fire Chief Ed Walker recommended waiving the $19,800 fee at Tuesday’s Select Board meeting, citing the company’s substantial “investment in the safety of [the] residents.” He said Keystone plan to spend about $240,000 to install the sprinklers in all six apartment buildings.

Walker said the fire department identified “a bunch of deficiencies” in the 1970s-era apartments after a small fire at the site in March. He described the improvements Keystone had already made to get the buildings up to code. Walker said Keystone’s choice of a sprinkler system was the “best solution” available to them, and that it would sufficiently address various structural “egress problems” and protect residents with limited mobility.
