Young people taking a stand for the plant

To the editor:

On May 15th, the state Senate rejected bills restricting the use of single-use plastic bags and straws in NH.

My name is Ilinca Drondoe and I am 14 years old. On behalf of myself and other youth in NH, I want to express that we are disappointed these bills did not pass. We are disappointed that our state legislature is resistant to propelling change. We are disappointed that our concerns about the future of our planet were dismissed by those in charge.

Young people around the world are taking a stand for the planet. Many of us are researching, testifying, rallying across the nation, and being more environmentally conscious. One of our concerns is that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish in 30 years if action is not taken.

Each day, the U.S. consumes 274 million plastic bags and half a billion plastic straws. Used for mere minutes, they pollute for centuries, harming wildlife and degrading into microplastics that infiltrate seafood and water. Although these bills did not pass, the fight is not over. To all who read this, I challenge you to make changes in your life.

Remember your reusable bags. Invest in a straw made of alternative materials. Action only requires a bit of awareness and willpower. Do it for your children and grandchildren, for this planet. We are the only species with the ability to destroy our environment as well as protect it.
