To the editor:
Cheeky newcomer Michael Strand (an 18-month resident of Peterborough and probably some blow-in from Massachusetts) proposes to lecture us (in a Tuesday, May 7 letter) about proper political behavior in our beloved Monadnock region. He seems to have come up with some new Trumped-up voter-suppression scheme (look, Strandy, this isn’t Mississippi, which just happens to be another state like Massachusetts that has four “s”-es in its name). New Hampshire is no “4-S” state (one “s” will do, thank-ye kindly). And none of us, fortunately, are “4-F” either (unlike certain highly-placed poohbahs along the Potomac who pontificate about enemy peoples of a press persuasion). Strand proposes some cock-a-mamy plan called “65-40 or fuggedaboudit” to deny many of us our basic suffrage. I suggest he get a Polk in the eye, in honor of our 11th president who took no guff from bolshy Brits trying to deny us our justly manifest destiny. We’ll raise Strand’s “65-40” with own “54-40 or fight” and send him back south of the 42nd parallel where he belongs!
