To the editor:
When Peterborough’s zoning was created in 1970, the majority of properties in the downtown area immediately became non-conforming, due to smaller lot sizes and reduced frontages. TNOZ 1 and 2 represent the kind of zoning that works in Peterborough. And by using existing infrastructure, such as water and sewer, we save some money and gain an even more vibrant downtown. TNOZ 1 and 2 were created so that new development would better reflect what exists today on the ground in Peterborough. Their function is to encourage more of what we already have. More of what we already love.
The reason the term “traditional neighborhood” was used, is simply to reflect traditional neighborhoods as they are, not to deceive or trick anyone. We feel it would be best to make changes through the Planning Board process and not by citizen petition. Through public hearings and open discussions. The Planning Board is firmly on record committing to the process of public engagement for proposed changes to these overlay zones. We have faith in this process and we hope you will join us and vote No on Zoning Petition Amendment 15.
