New Ipswich Selectman Jay Hopkins has resigned his position.

Hopkins, who has a year left in his term, gave his notice of resignation in January. His position will be filled, along with the regular three-year position, at the polls on March 12.

Bernard Hammill, who has represented the town on the Planning Board and Police Facility Committee, is the only person who has filed to fill the position.

Hopkins submitted his resignation on Jan. 22, according to New Ipswich Town Administrator Carlotta Pini, to allow for his position to be placed on the official ballot. Filing for candidate positions began on Jan. 23.

Pini said the Select Board has not discussed appointing a third Select Board member until March elections, as there are only four potential Select Board meetings before ballot voting and an official replacement is elected.

Pini said Hopkins had not given an official reason for his resignation. Hopkins did not respond to several messages requesting comment.
