A Jaffrey resident and a Peterborough resident were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a head-on crash in Peterborough on Monday night.

Heather Girouard, 43, of Peterborough, was driving north on Route 202 near the Jaffrey town line around 6:45 p.m. when she struck a guardrail and then a 2004 Chrysler minivan head-on, Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard said Tuesday morning. The minivan was traveling south and was driven by a 16-year-old female from Jaffrey.

Two medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene, Peterborough Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Brian Wall said in an email Tuesday morning, but both drivers were taken to Monadnock Community Hospital via ambulance after they were evaluated on scene.

“Once the patients were extricated, they were evaluated by the Peterborough paramedics and it was determined that they could both be transported to Monadnock Community Hospital,” Wall said. “The helicopters were canceled and returned.”

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be removed with the Jaws of Life.

The Jaffrey Fire Department also responded to the scene, Wall said, due to the crash’s vicinity to Jaffrey. The Jaffrey Fire Department was first on the scene, as they were already at their station for a training exercise, Wall said.

Guinard said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Route 202 was closed in both directions while emergency responders dealt with the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene after sustaining heavy front end damage.
