Avoid foreign wars

To the editor:

President-elect Donald Trump is unquestionably right when he says “Having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing … We have enough problems around the world without yet another one.”

The attempts to derail Trump’s presidency before he is even inaugurated arguably come from the same individuals who engineered 9/11 – certain elements in our own government and intelligence agencies as well as foreign agencies – the individuals whose vested interests in war and global hegemony are now threatened by Trump’s attitude toward Russia. Their actions through pre-emptive wars based on lies have inflicted untold suffering on citizens in this country and abroad, killing and maiming millions and driving countless other millions from their homes. Europe is currently overrun with refugees.

The Founding Fathers warned against the outcome of foreign wars. Both Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy foresaw the rise of unwarranted influence from the military-industrial complex. We cannot stand quietly by while a relatively small group of oligarchs destroys our republic and democracy. Their wars do not reflect the will of the great majority of citizens. America can never be safe or great, heal its divisions or even be respected by the world while it permits such savagery in its name.

Whatever our political persuasions, the American people must support president-elect Donald Trump on this issue. None of the countries we have invaded and destabilized since 9/11 were a physical threat to us that justified war. A small planet cannot endure unending wars, thermonuclear war, or tolerate those who would wage such wars for power and profit. Those who foment war are the real terrorists and they must be stopped. Our future depends on it. We the People are the true government – and above us is God in whom we trust.
