The winless Wilton-Lyndeborough girls had a chance to pick up their first victory of the year on Tuesday, as they hosted Mount Royal, but it was not to be.

The Christian academy, located in Sunapee, just jumped to the NHIAA varsity level this season, and the Knights were quite polite, even helping some Warriors players up off the ground mid-play, rather than running the fast break. Still, WLC struggled to score, putting nearly the entire scoring load on senior tri-captain Caitlyn Wittenauer.

It was a low-scoring affair on both ends, for a time; the scoreboard rested at 5-1 Mount Royal for what seemed like the majority of the first quarter. Eventually, the Knights started finding ways to put it in, and theyโ€™d come away with a 49-16 victory.

Of the Warriorsโ€™ 16 points, 13 were scored by Wittenauer.

โ€œI think we just need to communicate better and be able to take our time and get an open shot instead of rushing,โ€ Wittenauer said. โ€œThatโ€™s our major problem, rushing the ball and then not getting back on defense.โ€

Nonetheless, Wittenauer said she thinks her team has been steadily improving and she sees several opportunities for wins on their schedule, particularly the Feb. 3 rematch at Mount Royal. No matter the record, though, sheโ€™s got a winning attitude.

โ€œWeโ€™re having fun,โ€ Wittenauer said. โ€œI know weโ€™re losing and all, but I think weโ€™re working hard, so itโ€™s fun.โ€

WLC (0-6) is back in action at Farmington (1-2) on Jan. 6.
