Local fire departments were called to Peterborough Marble & Granite Wednesday morning, after an equipment failure lead to an emergency alarm, officials said.

Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker said that the incident was caused by an overheated compressor.

“They have a large diesel compressor, and it continuously ran, so it ran away from them and got over-heated,” he said. “They knocked it down with a fire extinguisher and then we arrived to handle it.”

Firefighters responded from Dublin, Hancock and Jaffrey, as well.

Peterborough Marble & Granite Works is located on Route 202, also known as Concord Street, near the intersection with Sand Hill Road.

The large air compressor is used for etching and otherwise cutting stones.
