Police in Peterborough say they were unable to determine the cause or intent of last week’s brush fire on Route 101.
The fire burned about 200 feet along the westbound side of the highway across from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Some speculated that the fire could be related to a campaign sign for President-Elect Donald Trump hanging from a tree at the site, but Peterborough police found no evidence of that.
“It was started on the side of the road, but we can’t determine how it started,” Capt. Ernie Belletete said. “There was a grass fire but the sign was not lit on fire or anything like that.”
The blaze broke out Sunday, Nov. 13, and disrupted traffic on Route 101. Police were called at 1:40 p.m., and handled the investigation.
Belletete said investigators could not even make a determination whether the fire was natural or man-made, let alone accidental or intentional.
“It’s completely undetermined what the cause was, no indication,” he said.
